MMORPG Vendetta Online Released 50

floop writes "Vendetta Online, a MMORPG trader/shooter with decent PvP action, came out of beta on Nov. 1st for Linux, Mac and Windows. I've found pirating hapless n00bs and hunting other pirates being the 2 most fun aspects of the game so far. It has an engrossing back story and pretty screenshots. The guys putting this out are a small operation, and this is their first project. "

    seriously though.. how does it fit for an 'old' elite addict?

    basically what i'm asking: is it a decent "elite online" so to speak.

      As an old Elite addict looking for his fix, Vendetta fit the bill rather well. In the terms of Privateer or Tachyon: The Fringe it's not as immerse, since you don't have the direct story following you or cool voice commentary. What the game does offer is 'twitch' space combat, where your skills as pilot matter more than your character levels in terms of making or becoming debris. At the moment I'm having fun preying on the various NPC bots and trading cargo under the constant risk of pirate activity (NPC and player) with the economy very dynamic based on player actions. The reason I'm sticking around is because I have great respect for the developers and their desire to evolve the game world in the directions the players take it. Throughout the beta they were very responsive to player feedback, and coming from ATITD (which had only two real developers) I've come to expect more from these smaller game companies. I've yet to be disappointed.

          Try it now, 8 hours free playtime before you gotta pay. Now that is gonna build a following.

          I think the try before you buy idea is great.
          I played the beta on and off for awhile and in my opinion the game just keeps getting better.

          Plus these guys really try and help you out with your problems in the forum.

    There are a lot of things that speak for this game:

    Tux on the box []

    Same price for all platforms

    Fastpaced game action with PvP

    Skillbased combat system, not "most expensive stuff wins"

    Fastpaced, no "point, click, wait"

    Minimal grinding (no hoursof waiting for the minings)

    Developer contact. Several player ideas have been implemented, some within days

    Developers actually ingame

    Unfortunately addictive

    So is this essentially... Escape Velocity in MMORPG form? That would kick so much ass, half the world wouldn't be able to sit down for weeks.
    • Almost, but not quite; it doesn't yet have quite the mission structure of the EV series, but word from the devs is that some of that stuff should be coming very soon. Oh, and it's 3D, too. ;)

    I'm one of those people with a job that takes up a lot of time. MMORPGs would be great if I didn't have to worry about paying for time I won't use. I wouldn't mind paying if I could guarantee I'd be making use of that time. Does anyone know if it is possible for me to pay for a month, disappear for a month, and come back again and still have the same character?

      The devs have so far promised that they will not delete game accounts until after a few months of idle-time.

      This should mean that you can keep your character, account and everything while you don't pay, and then come back and pay another month for your account and keep playing.

      However, I guess they will implement some kind of "pruning" of "dead" accounts after a while (as perhaps with the free trial accounts that don't pay for subscription) , since thats basically what I would do in a case like this.

      • I've actually sent an email to one of them asking about it.

        Main questions:
        Will there be hourly rates, which might be more attractive to working people?

        How long can I be absent before my account is deleted?

  • I dabbled in the beta series since the ~3.0 release of Vendetta TEST. Damn...this has come a good long way.

    I think I might come back, unless RL sucks me out.

    I've been betatesting this game for, um, a few years now. It's the greatest game ever. Here's some reasons:

    • Scalable Graphics engine- works on the lowest of low end, is beautiful on high end
    • Engrossing Gameplay- What can I say? It's entirely unique, and entirely fun.
    • Great Community- this is not like CS, where it's all the 13373573R5 mouthing off. It's got a RPG-worthy community.
    • Great Dev Team- 4 guys. And they did it all. If you have a bug, they fix it. They're available pretty much all the time. What more can a player want?
    • A Future- They've got a capital-ships addon underway (will be *supposedly* a free download), and they release updates every week or so, with new features and bugfixes.
    • Tri-Platform- OS X, Linux, Windows, whatever suits you, the game runs great. It even kinda runs on BSD and BeOS!

    If you're not playing this game already, you're missing out on a great game. So GO JOIN []!

    • I gotta tout, I was amazed by the graphics created by a team of 5. Then I heard its supposed to scale down really well and I was just playing it on my tablet with a 1ghz transmeta and a low end gf2. The game handles GREAT! I didn't have to change any graphics options. Just, a great game. I've been looking for this since tradewars.

      If only Derek Smart could have helped...

    Vendetta is truely a multi-player team game. While you can play it by yourself, the real fun kicks in when there are a few dozen ships from different factions in the same sector and they are at war. That and either killing pirates or being one.

    I expect that early on, people will not love the game. As enough people rise in power and wealth, the newer members will also benifit. Looking at how large the Vendetta universe is, I expect that it could handle 10,000 players at the same time without a problem -- and probably beyond 100,000. A couple thousand playing at the same time would probably be when things start getting interesting.

    There are promises of improvements to the universe over time. I'd be very interested in how the community grows and the changes impact the players in the next 3-6 months.
  • I just started a 14 day trial of Eve Online... It's not bad but it takes sooooo long to get anything done. I like the idea of Vendetta, so I'll check it out.
    I always wanted to play a game where you could fly multi crew ships... Is this implemented in Vendetta yet?
    • No multi crew ships but I hear it may be coming in the near future. They have been talking about these giant ships they call capitol ships which are supposed to have tremendous fire power, etc. Go check out the back story [] to get an idea of what they may have planned and what's in the game now. It's a very entertaining read.
  • Unfortunately, this game has one primary failing. It requires an online subscription.

    Of course they should be able to afford to support Linux gaming when they get a monthly subscription from Linux users.

    I want one time purchase games for Linux off the shelf.

    I doubt I will ever pay for a game that requires a monthly subscription (again) after having several bad experiences and realising that some months I get a lot of time to play and some months I have no time to play at all.

      If you really want an off the shelf game then buy the $49 6 month subscription. Its the same cost as a shelf box and I hardly buy more then 3 games a year leaving 6 months to be plenty of time to exaust the game. If you want to keep playing after 6 months then its obvious the game has more replay value then many other games. If it takes 6 months for you to finish a game then its not very cost effective for you to buy a new game.

      I dont mind month monthly subscriptions when you dont have to buy a box as well
    • Is 10-15$ a month really anything extravagant? Enough so that when you do want to play, you can count on the servers being there and available? And the monthly fees from what I've seen usually go primarily into infrastructure and support staff, rather then making hats out of money and whatnot.
      • $10 is acceptable to me, as long as I can get at least a few hours of enjoyment each month. Think about it, most people have no problem spending $10 for a 2-3 hour movie (not much replay value there), a couple of beers at their favorite pub (maybe an hour or two of replay), or an average quality meal at a mediocre resturant (could be several hours of "replay" there).

        Then again, I'm still pissed off that I spent $50 on Doom 3 and have only gotten about 4 or 5 hours of frustration out of it. :/
  • I've seen about everything they've done so far.. the stations you dock at give you this feel of a gigantic civilization, and since the game has gone live there is a continuous hustle and bustle of people. One of my favorite things is the defense of the cargo ships. Two nations are at war, and get their supplies from a third, so people from the warring factions try and steal the other's cargo. Its really intense.
  • From those screenshots it looks like somebody finally went and made a decent game with the Freelancer engine. I'm pretty sure they used a different one, but it looks similar.
    *sigh* Freelancer was so disappointing. Look, we have an absolutely enormous world for you to play in, and, erm, no roleplaying elements... and the combat is point-and-click... and most of the world is empty space... and only three ships viable for high-level use... but hey it sure looks pretty []

  • That's a fine idea, but until the other ~50% of the people with decent video cards, the ATi crowd, gets some reasonable linux driver support they won't buy them.

    I had a 9600XT that would never, and I mean NEVER work right in Mandrake. I sold it and bought a Geforce FX 5900XT so I could actually use my Linux install to play games, and now I'm gonna try this out on it! Should be cool!

    This game is what was missing in Freelancer, even though it was "open-ended" there was only so much you could do that was
    • It's possible... but not fun ;o). I've got it working under Gentoo fairly easily, using portage.

      It looks really nice, too. The only problem I've noticed is some "color flickering" when rglow is enabled. It's not enough to really bother much, though.

      On the other hand, when I upgrade my video card within the next couple months, NVidia will be my choice :o).
  • ... and I might just sign up and spend some money on it in a few weeks. Glad to see it mentioned here.
  • The game doesn't try to be a sim in any way, and the graphics are horrid for the requirements. If you're looking for a space flight sim instead of Duck Dodgers Online, I would recommend Jumpgate instead, which can be found at []
  • Either I'm being dumb, but I can't find the list of minimum specs for the game anywhere on the website. The most obvious place, the "technical" FAQ, sure doesn't have it, and if the download for the free trial does, it's after the registration form that I can't be bothered to fill in until I know if it's even worth my time to do so.

    Having read through part 8 or 9 of the backstory last night, it looks fairly interesting...
    • They appear to have removed the minimum specs. Not sure why. Anyhow, here they are:

EV online it is! more difficult than EV imho (combat especially), but much faster, too ... ie trade (and other) missions can't be done like in EVN by hyperjumping ten dozen systems in a row without having to put yourself in harms way ... quite the opposite! constant threat by bots and other players of being raided and losing your precious cargo! it think this game absolutely rocks! it also seems to be much more stable and la
