Mandrake 10.1 RC1 Available 6

Freshly Exhumed writes "Warly has announced the availability of Mandrake Linux 10.1 RC1 via torrent or FTP for those who enjoy bug reporting. Key ingredients: kernel 2.6.8 with parts of 2.6.9, xorg 6.7.0, KDE 3.2.3, Gnome 2.6, Mozilla 1.7.2, glibc 2.3.3, and gcc 3.4.1, among other goodies found in over 1,800 packages. This announcement follows on the heels of the Mandrake & LaCie project known as GlobeTrotter, a USB hard drive-based Mandrake distribution portable to most of today's PCs."

    New structure:
    The general hierarchy of the repository has been changed. Everything related to installation is now in /install, included live install files (install/stage2/live), images (install/images), isolinux (install/isolinux) and ramdisks (install/stage2). Packages are still separated in media, located in /media. A top level /media/media_info directory contains general medadata, and each medium has a subdirectory media_info with related packages metadata.

      • there's currently a known bug in kernel-2.6.8.1 for CD burning Bug #10840
      • the correction is available / should be included soon : http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3659
      • current impact on K3B : K3B news cannot recognize CD writer
      According to the bug, this is now fixed with kernel 2.6.8.1-8mdk. So, you just need to update the kernel after install (which is acceptable for an RC).

    While this is 10.1 up from 10, it might seem like a small step. However, most of the updates are in the packages and not nessesarily in mandrake specific stuff. People are probably going to upgrade because it's easier than loading on all new packages. Plus, it looks like they've got some nicer automatic hardware support. I'll give mandrake that, their hardware support is pretty good.
