Ottawa Linux Symposium 20

Yes, it's YALC - Yet Another Linux Conference. This time, it's in the Great White North. Andrew J. Hutton is organizing the Ottawa Linux Symposium (if that link doesn't work, try this one), a smaller conference, aimed more towards developers than the casual user. Talks include a QoS tutorial, and a keynote by Alan Cox. Andrew asked me to reiterate that this is a "conference and party, not a trade show".

  • I've known Andrew Hutton for years, and he is one of the main people behind Achilles Internet, one of the best ISPs in Ottawa. He also does a great deal to help community groups by giving free accounts to them. Finally, a Linux event I didn't plan (see above URL) that is close to me!

  • I really, really want to go to this conference, but two things hold me back: 1, it's in Ottawa (meaning I'd have to take time off work) and 2, it costs $225 - $275, and I probably will have to take the latter seeing as I don't start work till July. Grr, but Alan Cox will be there ... why can't it be Toronto!

    that'll never happen. VMS, Alpha and HP Unix for me, although maybe I didn't make the hint of witty sarcasm obvious enough.

    Note that the cost of flying the various notable developers in to Ottawa will cost at least $10,000 CDN.

    Add to that the consideration that decent conference facilities cost some number of thousands of dollars per day. (Is it at Rideau Centre?)

    Add to that some hotel bills, and right away there's $20,000 in expenses. They need to have 100 people chipping in just to cover that.

    Alternatively, feel free to spend the thousands yourself to fly to Mexico City and England to visit "folk." That should be free, right!?!?

    And to those that are complete morons, you may not yet have noticed that the only thing about Free Software that is forcibly free of charge is the LICENSE.

    Agreed, Andrew is a great guy and also a long time Linux devotee.

    He made me my first set of Debian 1.44M diskettes years ago (like, five or six?) when Achilles was starting out on an ISDN line in his parent's place.

    His was the first true ISP around Ottawa, and I wanted to try out gopher under Linux on my 386DX. Oh, back in the day...
  • Two hour drive, ~$300. It's a wee bit steep, but I may have to invest in the trip. I'll have to get more info on the talks and tutorials to decide if it is worth it.

    I can suggest drinking holes, paint ball fields and firing ranges as needed..

    I wish I had an boss to scam for the entrance fee, but I'm sure crashing it won't be too hard.. :)

  • Only a few hours from home and Alan Cox will be there... 225$ seems a little steep, but I think it might be worth it.
  • Two things:
    1. To those who are complaining about the price, I would point out that 150$USD is far less than what you would have to pay for most conference tickets. LinuxExpo, for instance, is more expensive, especially when you factor in the cost of tutorial sessions.
    2. I am glad to see that this conference focuses on the two things that really interest me:
      • What MORE can I do with Linux.
      • How does it work.
      The idea to keep away from exhibits and business talks is a good one IMHO. I've always thought that most conferences could do without them anyway.
    One ticket sold.

    To those the don't like $ 225... whatever! Conference rooms and plane tickets for the speakers aren't free! So either it becomes highly commercial to reduce fees, and there is a lot of bullshit that comes with it (people trying to see you things) or you pay a measly amount for some good speakers.

    For the truely poor students, I would also point out that Ottawa has a pretty good youth hostel downtown.
