I was a bit reassured by his answer to

"Does Linux risk "losing its soul" as some people fear?"

I would have liked to see more interesting questions, but maybe everyone was short on time, or editors long on scissors.

I think linux is a good operating system.

Alan is definitely one of the Grand Old Men of the free software movement, and he's but a mere lad! A brilliant and prolific implementer, well spoken, and a helluva nice guy to boot. We need more like him, and we all need to be more like him.

Thank goodness for hackers who can value
Real Live People more than computers.

What's the scoop on the Linus burnout episodes that Alan mentioned in passing?

Holy smokes! I'd never seen a picture of him
    before. I'd always associated a clean-cut guy
with that clean-cut sounding name (short, easy
to pronounce, all the usual bogus reasons we
develop preconceptions). It's like hearing all
those funny voices coming out of the Dilbert
    characters.

Now that I have it straight, he'll probably
get a crewcut and shave and the next photo I
see will put my eyebrows up again.
  • Now that's intresting to note. Alan's actually gotten a lot of penquins for comparison. I wonder if he'll post it on linux.org.uk...

  • It was interesting to read his comment that 2.0.x will probably be dead when 2.2.x reaches maintenance phase. I thought one of the great things about free software was that you wouldn't be forced to upgrade a la Microsoft every time indefinetly. I hope that even if Alan, Linus, something new comes out. 2.0.x works great for me and I have no intention of upgrading my kernel to 2.2 any time soon. I plan to keep using 2.0.x et. al. stop supporting 2.0.x, someone else keeps it alive.

There is a strong body of Opinion that reckons that underneath the hat, sunglasses and beard it's really .... BILL GATES.

see any episode of Scooby Doo - "If it wasn't for you meddleing kids ..."

  • I feel obliged to correct some of the most glaring FUD in this post. Yes, Jon Taylor was hired by Creative Labs - first and foremost programming Linux drivers for their sound cards (SB live etc). No, he wasn't the KGI "head developer" and no KGI is not turning into "a mostly binary only project". I suggest you to read the mailing list archives at http://www.ggi-project.org/ for the real details.
  • Umm, could you provide references for this claim?
  • Next time you read his diary, check out "the other
side". Mithinks Mrs. Cox shuld start Documenting
    stuff :).
  • Sure - but by dead I think he meant no new feature
And since you have the source code every one can patch it and maintaint the version they are using.
  • See:
LWN 10/1/1998 [lwn.net], 10/8/1998 [lwn.net], and 10/15/1998 [lwn.net] for some discussion of the episodes referenced here.

  • You ouoght to see him eat an ice cream cornet.

As for Mr Cox Shaving I think that's very unlikely.

    Cheers David
