Amiga Fast File System Makes Minor Comeback In New Linux Kernel (theregister.com) 12

The Amiga Fast File System (AFFS) is making a minor comeback in the new version of the Linux kernel. The Register reports: As noted by chief penguin Linus Torvalds in his weekly state-of-the-kernel report, a change to AFFS popped up among what he described as a collection of "the usual suspects" in new submissions to the kernel over the last week. The Amiga was ahead of its time, but is now largely a curiosity. However Suse developer David Sterba has noticed that "The basic permission bits (protection bits in AmigaOS) have been broken in Linux' AFFS - it would only set bits, but never delete them. Also, contrary to the documentation, the Archived bit was not handled."

"Let's fix this for good, and set the bits such that Linux and classic AmigaOS can coexist in the most peaceful manner," he added. Torvalds appears to have agreed inasmuch as Sterba's code has made it into rc4 of version 5.9 of the Linux kernel. Torvalds said that while rc4 is a big release -- he rated it as "larger than usual" -- it's still "well within the normal range, and not something I'll lose any sleep over."

It's moving again--someone pass me a stake and a mallet!

    • I'm just waiting for the release of the BlackBerry Amiga, running BeOS.

    • If it was that easy to get rid of Amiga...it only needs a sparkle of hope from a few Amigans, perhaps only one, and it will remain rearing its head again and again.

      Note:
I'm one of those, so it there are still many years for producers of stakes and mallets before they are out of a job...

      • Maybe it's waking up from it's preternatural sleep to send us a warning from the beyond? Don't kill the oracle until after we get the prophecy!

      • Maybe it can be the first thing in Linux to be written in rust, that will surely kill it.
      • Every time you propose dropping support for m68k as it's hopelessly broken, a mob with torches and pitchforks pops up and screams murder. And they don't even always patch the immediate problem (and never beyond that).

So not only that spooky castle has undead inside, but the village is full of peasant thralls.

  • None of the linked sites explain WHY they want to resurrect the AFFS. Does it have advantages or disadvantages over the current Linux or Windows filesystem? If so, what are they?

Yes. The advantage is that the Linux and Windows filesystems are not AFFS.

I mean, your not going to read your amiga disks with NTFS or EXT3 (or whatever the fuck the current linux hotness is0.

If you are not an Amiga user. This feature is not for you. If you ARE an Amiga user, then its critically important.
