Tuxedo's New Manjaro Linux Laptops Will Include Massive Customization (forbes.com) 17

Tuxedo Computers "has teamed up with Manjaro to tease not one, not two, but several" Linux laptops, Forbes reports:
The Tuxedo Computers InfinityBook Pro 15...can be loaded with up to 64GB of RAM, a 10th-generation Intel Core i7 CPU, and as high as a 2TB Samsung EVO Plus NVMe drive. You can also purchase up to a 5-year warranty, and user-installed upgrades will not void the warranty...

Manjaro Lead Project Developer Philip Müller also teased a forthcoming AMD Ryzen laptop [on Forbes' "Linux For Everyone" podcast]. "Yes, we are currently evaluating which models we want to use because the industry is screaming for that," Müller says. "In the upcoming weeks we might get some of those for internal testing. Once they're certified and the drivers are ready, we'll see when we can launch those." Müller also tells me they're prepping what he describes as a "Dell XPS 13 killer."

"It's 10th-generation Intel based, we will have it in 14-inch with a 180-degree lid, so you can lay it flat on your desk if you like," he says.

The Manjaro/Tuxedo Computers partnership will also offer some intense customization options, Forbes adds.

"Want your company logo laser-etched on the lid? OK. Want to swap out the Manjaro logo with your logo on the Super key? Sure, no problem. Want to show off your knowledge of fictional alien races? Why not get a 100% Klingon keyboard?"

    • I agree. If you're a niche manufacturer or assembler of gadgets that target a relatively small market, you might as well go for cheaper or better components even if they're not the popular default.

I'm just wondering why the makers of GNU/Linux laptops don't offer products for the budget market as well. I don't mean the cut-price market dominated by Chinese white-box laptops or Chromebooks, but laptops similar in price to the low-end Windows laptops offered by mass-market brands such as HP, Dell or Asus.

      • An open alternative for a chromebook might be this one, at just 200 usd: https://store.pine64.org/ [pine64.org].

Full HD resolution, 4GB RAM and micro SD slot (max 2 TB...?) for expansion of the admittedly small 64 GB flash memory.

Because there's no money to be made.

First, those budget laptops are really low end and generally crappy. If you're not selling them in volume, you're not going to make any money out of it. At this poin

  • Heck its targeted advertising so someone will buy it. Personally I buy a secondhand corporate machine and load linux on it if I need it, I have five different ones so there is room for all.

  • They may void coverage of any components the upgrades directly cause to fail, but the rest of the product is still covered by the warranty by law [wikipedia.org].

  • How is a laptop optimized for Arch?

  • I got my new work laptop set up just this last week. If I'd known about the updates (specifically the RAM option), I'd likely have gone with the Tuxedo. Slashvertisement or not, this announcement is definitely relevant for this audience.

  • .. on my list for when I should purchase a new computer and has been for a few years now. I was mainly an Apple user between 2003 and 2016 and have since moved away from them again. This one is a very very nice addition to their line. I also like Manjaro. I use Manjaro ion quite a few setups right now.

Bottom line: Tuxedo is Germanys SystemD and if you're looking for a dedicated Linux laptop, check them out as well.

    My 2 Eurocents.

Aren't you glad you're not getting all the government you pay for now?
