Debian, OpenSUSE, Arch, Gentoo and Grml Merge 117

tomhudson writes "debian, arch linux, opensuse, grml, and gentoo are merging to create a new distro: 'We are to announce the birth of the Canterbury distribution. Canterbury is a merge of the efforts of the community formerly known as Debian, Gentoo, Grml, openSUSE and Arch Linux to produce a really unified effort and be able to stand up in a combined effort against operating systems, to show off that the Free Software community is actually able to work together for a common instead of creating more diversity. Canterbury will be as technologically simple as Arch, as stable as Debian, malleable as Gentoo, have a solid Live framework as Grml, and be as open minded as openSUSE.' Arch Linux developer Pierre Schmitz explained: 'Arch Linux has always been about keeping its as simple as possible. Combining efforts into one single distribution will dramatically reduce complexity for developers, users and of course upstream . Canterbury will be the next evolutionary step of Linux distributions.' This will without a doubt put on Ubuntu."

      • Is that a subtle-subtle meta-April Fools comment? "Case closed on Jerusalem UFO" & "World Backup Day" were yesterday. So, yea, the latter. Organizers of World Backup Day may want to pick a different day ... unless there aim is to say a lot of viruses will wake up on April Fools. I could see that.

All very good points... yes, I agree. Maybe instead of refreshing my gmail, I should be refreshing by /. Or add a pre-bedtime viewing.

        • World backup day being yesterday was a good idea. It gives people one last chance to make sure they're backed up before April Fool's day commences and they might need to recover their datas.

      • Kinda disappointing that there is no World Backup day. I know a few companies that could stand to observe that.

    • wtf?? ... i think i pissed my pants while reading this.
  • hahaha. Yes, very good april fool's day jokes. Merging OpenSUSE and Debian? LOL the first thing that caused me to see that as odd is the fact that they have different packaging systems. RPM and DEB. :P Among other things.
    • There's no reason that different packaging systems should be a problem. After all, it's the source you want to be common if you're creating a "common base". The packages are a distro-specific detail.

      Think "UnitedLinux."

Remember how Suse was involved then?

Now, while this is probably an April Fools joke, the idea behind it is worth looking at, especially if you want to create a "rolling release". And the OpenSuse project already allows you to create packages in other formats for other distros ...

      So

    • It's just a matter of doing it old school.

  • Notice that no link is included to the new website for the Canterbury distribution. That's too suspicious.

    Almost fooled me, there.

  • if something like that ever happens, dont choose something like "Canterbury" as distro name.
  • ... Ahhh this is an good end to the night in oz, well done /.!
  • The tweaks should have let me choose:

..As [open-minded] as Debian, [technologically simple] as Gentoo, [stable] as Ubuntu etc...

  • Changing a quotation is verboten, even on 4/1.

  • I tried it and discovered that description is wrong.
It is stable as Ubuntu, bleeding edge packages from Centos, newbie friendly as Gentoo, with great documentation from Arch and moreover I if you register you get technical support from Dell for free
  • Maybe they could merge and finally fix the dependency hunt problem with all those libraries and out-dated packages for each distro. Applications could actually come with the version of the library you need rather than relying on distributions to get it right.

I'm pleased that they finally did it, just wanted to let everyone know: This merger was my idea!

And a fine idea it is. About the only way to stop that ever-spreading cancer called Ubuntu. A distribution that simply takes, never ever gives back to the community, and above all brings people into our community that never had the right to use linux in the first place. People can even "try it out"before installing it.

Come on, do you "try out" Zen or Karate? No! You don't! You wash your master's car and polish it , you do the lowest duties for years and years, there is no elevator to the mountain! But no, not with Ubuntu! Some people, who should really be using windows, can now claim that they have their laptop, their desktop, their file-server, and their media center running linux! Without ever going through the required amount of suffering!

I welcome the merger and I plan to start a petition later today: the new super-distro should have only a text based installer and standard maintenance login only through a remote serial console!

    • Playing along:

About the only way to stop that ever-spreading cancer called Ubuntu.

Detractors will likely call this new distro "Cancerbury". I guess you have to fight cancer with cancer.

never had the right to use linux

GPL. What other right are you talking about?

People can even "try it out"before installing it.

Grml isn't the only distro to have a live CD. Debian-based Knoppix and the lightweight distro Puppy are also live CDs. But I'll admit that Puppy was my gateway drug to Ubuntu.

Some people, who should really be using windows

When Windows came out, smug MS-DOS weenies said the same thing about Windows users "who should really be using" Macs.

I welcome the merger and I plan to start a petition later today: the new super-distro should have only a text based installer and standard maintenance login only through a remote serial console!

Good luck with your server distro.

  • Windox 8 will be a joint effort of Apple and M$ bringing the best features of each of their OS's to users.
  • I'm wondering if the name chosen, Canterbury, is some sort of Canterbury Tales reference -- a diverse group of travellers? I didn't see any jokes in the names of people quoted, but I assume those are actual people associated with the different Linux distributions.

  • One distro to rule them all,
    One distro find them,
One distro to bring them all
and in the GPL bind them!

  • Why can't all /. articles be this good?
  • One semi-believable story mixed in with the real stories would go a lot further than this string of obvious nonsense.
