KDE in a Zone 14

James Dickens writes "Mini-Howto Getting KDE 3.4 to run in a zone is posted at http://uadmin.blogspot.com/ Running KDE 3.4 in a zone Not only does zones make a great play area to test software. You can erase it all with two commands. If you want to keep the software you can continue to run it in a zone, or you can install in the global zone for permanent use."

This is not penguin news, this is about kde on solaris.

To do this in a Real Operating System, you would do:
      # mkdir kde
      # cdebootstrap sarge kde
      # jstar
      (vi/emacs for heretics) kde/etc/apt/sources.list
      # chroot kde
      # apt-get update
      # apt-get install <whatever dependencies kde needs>
      #
      install the thing itself

For Gentoo/RedHat/Indy's hat/etc and AFAIK BSDs as well, replace apt with the relevant equivalent.
It's only Solaris that decided to name good old chroots differently.
      • Or better yet have an entirely virtual environment - and install a distribution in an isolated manner using Qemu [debian-adm...ration.org].

It's a great way of testing upgrading from Woody -> Sarge [debian-adm...ration.org], or other things.

      • Well, true ... but the fact that you can install an application (even a fairly large one like KDE) in a chroot/jail environment is not news. The news is that the blog shows how to do it on Solaris. Which is fine and all but I am not sure if it is supposed to be a front page matter or not ... just look at the comments ;)

On the other hand, a rewording of the submission (something like "how can I do this in linux/bsd") would have been better to provoke discussion - for instance, installing kde in a jail is

Processes running in a zone are completely isolated from the rest of the system, not just the filesystem. So you can't monitor or interact with processes that aren't in your zone, even if you're root. So to say that a zone is just another name for a chroot environment is completely wrong.
    • What the heck is a zone? It's almost guaranteed that your average reader won't know. (I didn't.) That really ought to be in the leader text. From th etext, I couldn't tell if it was a KDE thing, or what.

(I still get tired of seeing people whine about the /. editors, but at least I empathize with the whiners!)

Hurrah! For years I've been awaiting the ability to....

    um....

    something!

    Something very exciting!

If only this was connected to Vinge's Zones - then we'd have something to be excited about, rather than complete confusion...
    • I call bad slashdot form.

Admitting ignorance means admitting weakness. You are inviting the moderators to thin the herd.

What you are supposed to do is do a quick Google search on "Solaris Zones", spend five minutes getting a superficial idea of what they are. Then you are supposed to write a post that dismisses them as useless because your favorite operating system doesn't have them, but instead has some other capability (e.g. xen). Your argument need only stand up to a level of scrutiny that similar to

That might have been what I would do if the article posting actually contained the word "Solaris" anywhere in it. Which one doesn't usually expect for articles posted in the Linux section of Slashdot.

I don't know why I get so personally offended by the shoddy quality of slashdot journalism. I think it's because I feel insulted, or perhaps it's shadenfreude, based on the fact that I personally could do better if I were editing
  • Download, Install, & Configure Solaris.

For those of you like me on a Debian (Mepis). Or DownLoad, Install & Configure Kanotix.

I still haven't quite figured out a better way other than Waiting.

    Damn your Consistency DEBIAN!!!!!

In case you editors are watching "WE" hate the confirm script! Especially those blind trolls.

    To find your command, run:
