redletterdave writes: "On April 28, 2011, a 17-year-old boy traveled to Chenzhou City in the Hunan Province of China to sell his kidney for a new iPad 2. One year later, the boy's health is quickly deteriorating due to renal deficiency, and five conspirators have been charged with intentional injury. The conspirators gave the boy a total of 22,000 yuan (about $3,400) — including an extra 2,200 for his troubles — to have his right kidney removed at Chenzhou's No. 198 Hospital. One of the defendants was reportedly paid about 220,000 yuan (roughly $35,000) to arrange the transplant, of which he gave 22,000 to the boy and split the rest of the 198,800 yuan between the surgeon, the three other defendants in the case, and other medical personnel. Five individuals are charged so far, but several other suspects involved in the case are still being investigated."
