SuSE Labs Formed 38

SuSE has formed SuSE Labs, an effort to contribute to free software projects. The press release (which can be mangled by Babelfish for all you non-German speakers) mentions projects like XFree86, KDE, and ISDN4Linux which SuSE has already worked on, and says that they will be working on them in the future, as well as other projects like ALSA. This seems pretty cool - I know Jaroslav (the ALSA guy) was hired by SuSE awhile ago.

    Mr. Simon, if you read this, Please release us a working version of your mlx driver. I'm so grateful for the help SuSE is giving our community. PM2 is a cheap board (30 bucks) and your efforts in providing a fully working opengl hardware acceleartion to PM2 users is much appericated. We would really like to see a working version out in the CVS. (which is stagnated with old version that do not work with 90% of the pm2's out there). Please help

    Thank god, at least ONE of the bigger distros is finally throwing their weight behind ALSA. Maybe now I'll finally be able to install it successfully. :) It would sure be nice to have full-duplex on my AWE-64 (no thanks to the closed sound system crippleware).

    I asked RedHat support several times if they were ever going to ship ALSA drivers instead of the Closed Sound System drivers, and never got a response at all.

    gee, it didn't seem to work for redhat. they spent over two million dollars on development, release gobs of free software, and for some reason are acused of being the microsoft of linux.

    i wish suse luck. i hope all the linux distributors follow companies like suse, redhat, and even va systems and contribute back to the linux community.
  • The best thing SuSE could do for free software development would be to free YaST, their proprietary setup tool.

    It would also help solve the problem of SuSE being less well known than Red Hat - there are many meta-distributions such as Mandrake or Yellow Dog based on Red Hat Linux, but none based on SuSE, because of the YaST licence.
  • Lets just hope they don't have the problems that RHAD have had with trouble in the ranks. I only hope that they are going to do something useful and not just use it for publicity (which RedHat did to a certain extent, although they have produced some good stuff).

    I thought ALSA was going to be included in a future kernel version?
    If that is the case, distro's wouldn't really need to ship it, unless for `just in case` situations.

  • SuSE has also worked a lot on X development, including work on xservers and on SaX, which is a pretty nice setup program for X. They're also sponsoring the DOS-Emu project if I am not mistaken. Of course "SuSE Linux Labs" is both a publicity stunt as well as a "let's-catch-up-to-RedHat" stunt. But who cares? It can only help us.
  • You could call this their first publicity stunt in this direction.
    AFAIK they have done a lot before for linux development, especially for the kernel itself too, which Justin forgot to cite for the press release. Just look at email adresse of at least one regular kernel-dev poster.
    I think they do as much as before and just call it now "SuSE Labs". This could be intended to just silence the dumb accusations about SuSE only ripping off linux.

    it's more "giving customers a reason to use SuSE"
    which isn't bad --but it's hardly noble.

  • Sorry if you feel that I shouldn't have made that post, I just did it since I myself prefer to read the translations that people provide in the comments rather than to go to Bablefish myself. Since nobody had done that yet I did it myself.

    Also, about the format in my first post. Maybe someone can explain what is wrong here, it had the same HTML tags as the second post, and in preview it looked fine, but when I submitted it the tags were removed. I had to post it without preview in order for the tags to stay in place. Is there a bug in the scripts?

    Same thing happening with this post, the tags dissapear when I use preview.

    I'm not convinced it's necessarily only a publicity stunt. I think if they end up with 'an organisation' to do the work then it's only a good thing.

    I think it would be nicer if instead of just giving a URL for Babelfish, folks pasted a link to the translated document just to save cut&paste in X in netscape problems... I need more windows open than I want to work around it.
    And of course, the results of the translation are not phenomenal...

  • I rather wish that SuSE would come out with a PPC version of their distro. Currently they only offer to sell you MkLinux.

    Still, it's nice to see them getting into the game. It's a little weird how they seem to be less known than Red Hat, since they're a heckuva lot bigger. We have three SuSE boxes at work and several clients' webservers from us are also running SuSE on dual-Pentia boxes. Pretty cool stuff.

    Well, if ya wanna pronounce it as the SuSE people do (i.e. in German), it's like this:

    In other words, it rhymes with "schmooze" with an "eh" on the end. ;-)

    Of course, "Susie" sounds cuter. ;-))

  • I pronounce it susie, but from the SuSE FAQ -
    How do you pronounce SuSE?

    It should be pronounced like "Soose". The "U" sounds like the "oo" in "moose", the last "e" is spoken like the "a" in "at".
    But in general it is not very important to pronounce it correctly, as long as it is clear what you are talking about.
  • The manual is well written but as a newbie who had little trouble setting up RedHat 5.1 and 6.0 I must say I found the manual almost unuseable. It frequently has screens and menus in the manual that are not found in the install process and it assumes a knowledge of Linux that I don't possess. Also I might point out the hardware database is much smaller than that in RedHat 6. I had problems getting X running on my old monitor.

    The English is very good and straight forward. In fact, I wouldn't have thought of it as a translation from the German manual except for the few errors in spelling. For myself, I found this distribution and manual to be the most helpful yet in setting Linux up.
  • I agree, but they seem like they can do it right and if they take RHs "mistakes" as "lessons learned" then everything should be okay.

    Off the thread though: Yet again we're told to put a url through Babelfish. Well, I quote the very first line of the SuSE report "the SuSE getting thing AG, one the Linux Distributoren leading world-wide". Babelfish is neat, but I don't think it should be relied on in a manadtoraly (sic?) English speaking environment.

    Seriously, IMHO you should have attempted to improve the actual langauge in the Babelfish output.
