Netflix To Add Soccer Video Game Based On FIFA World Cup Next Year (reuters.com) 14

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Netflix on Wednesday said it will add a soccer simulation title to its gaming portfolio, as the streaming giant looks to leverage the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament to deepen its video game push. The soccer title will be developed and published by Delphi Interactive, which is also helping create a premium James Bond game called "007 First Light," and in association with the sport's governing body, FIFA. Netflix said the game will launch in time for the world's most-watched sporting event, scheduled to start June next year in the U.S.

  • How is a new soccer video game news? Isn't there a new soccer game released every year?

  • I see a games option on some streaming devices and I guess this informs me that NetFlix has streaming games too.

But, does anyone here play games on streaming devices? What's it like to play a game on Roku or Apple TV?

    • They aren't streaming games. Netflix has a bunch of low-quality games that run on the device, with simple controls so you can use a remote or pair your phone to use as a controller. It's not a brilliant experience. Think of it as the sort of thing you'd want to do only if you were trapped in a hotel room.

They also have mobile games that run on your phone but require a Netflix login to play. These are usually older games that still have some clout, so Netflix paid for the rights and ported them to mobile...

      • So you've played these games? And "the experience is not brilliant"?

Why do they make these games? Are people paying to play them?

        • Yes I've played them. There's no way they make money off this. It's kind of a test market, at best. There are a few decent titles, but they pad out the catalog with a lot of mediocre casual games.

I assume the market segment they're hoping to capture is the budget casual market, like kids or non-gamer adults, as an excuse not to cancel their Netflix subscription.

I think it's one of those things that Apple started doing with Apple Arcade, so now everyone wants to do it too but isn't sure why.

          YouTube has games

  • giving a douchebag a worthless medal to start it off?
  • mr bond i expect you to dive!

  • Fifa would look at either sega or konami to make a game of their license, as both consistently and for years made better soccer games than the garbage that had the license.
But we're on the stupid shareholder world, so companies get forced into doing stupid decisions.

  • This seems like free advertisement for Netflix's game section which I've never seen anyone actually use.
