PalmPilot book by O'Reily

Ichabod writes "O'Reily made a book about the PalmPilot. Suppossedly it contains all sorts of cool tricks and undocumented tips. This URL is pretty much just an ad for it. " Next semester I'm taking a course in programming small machines where we're gonna take on the Pilot as part of the class. Might just have to snag a copy and warm up for it :)

VNC for the PalmPilot!

K. Fisher writes " Check this for some interesting developments on the freely available VNC software from Oracle/Olivetti. VNC is sort-of a free PC/Anywhere clone that works extremely well on X-Terminals and Linux. :) Well, someone has ported it to the PalmPilot! Check the URL and scroll near the bottom...the port isn't available yet, but you can watch an AVI of it in action on the CoPilot. I can't WAIT for this thing. :) (Oh yeah there's a port available for Wince devices too...big whoop.. :) "

3Com and Microsoft Settle Palm

Bill Meyer writes "3Com and Microsoft has settled out of court on the use of the "Palm PC" name. Read about it here here" Looks like MS will now use 'palm-sized PC' instead of the forma term PalmPC. It's not exactly ground breaking, but I think 3com was right to raise a stink on this one.

Microsoft Drops PalmPC

Microsoft has to stop using the term PalmPC to describe the newest PalmPilot-like Handheld PCs. 3Com had filed suit in France, Germany, and Italy, but the case will never go to court. Also painfully obvious in the report is the fact that third party software is needed to some things with Pilots that can be done with Windows CE. They also didn't mention the software is free. More ZDNet FUD?

Piloted to the Promised Land

Darren Stalder writes " The latest review of the PalmPilot in the Guardian is wonderful and made me laugh out loud. Douglas Rushkoff outlnes why the PalmPilot has taken over the PDA world and why so much free software has been released for it - simplicity and transparency. He suggests that the PalmPilot is forcing us to reassess our computing priorities."

Palm III Info

Raju Tavadia wrote in to give us this link and this one to a pair of articles about the Palm III- with pictures of the beast.

Hans Cathcart wrote in to correct me on James Nicolson's comments yesterday about the 3com/Pilot/Linux port. Apparently The Linux/microcontroller Project is still doing the port, so I'm not sure what 3com's connection was in all this. The huge response that the article recieved on Slashdot is something that high ranking people at 3com should see. Geek appeal sold a lot of Pilots- Linux will sell even more. They should do everything they can to support this project (read:Big cash donations to TLMP).

PalmPilot Prices Cut

3Com has cut the retail price of the PalmPilot Pro and Personal. The MSRP for the Pro is now $299, the Personal's is now $199. These cuts foreshadow the introduction of the new Pilot, to be announced later this week, probably. At these prices, who can afford NOT to get one, especially considering the street price for these machines is typically 60%-80% if you shop around.

3com to Port Linux to Pilot!

James Nicolson wrote in to tell us that at last nights SVLUG meeting, a 3com rep announced they would be porting Linux to the Pilot, and gave Linus a free Pilot. This is definately a great announcement- with the PIII coming down the pipe, every serious Linux nerd will bite on this. Pilot's are inexpensive and cool, and with Linux on them, they'll be indispensable.
