Review of $69 Dec Multia

Raz wrote in to say "Several days ago there was an article about cheap Dec alphas on Slashdot, here is an review by someone that bought one & tested both NT 4.0 and Red Hat Linux on it. " It might be of some interest to note that the machine being dealt with here is almost identical to the one that ran Slashdot for the first 6 months of its existance.

Keyboard Spraypainting Tips Wanted

Josh Arnold writes in with this crazy idea: "I recently spray painted my keyboard a nice chrome color, however (as one might expect) the paint it already starting to be worn off the keys. I also intend to paint my monitor and cpu case, so I want to get this right =) I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to make this work. Perhaps some extra protective coating that could be applied, or maybe I just need to bake it in the oven <grin>?" Kids, only do this with proper supervision (grabbing the nearest person interested will suffice...)

Diamond Netcommander ISDN/EC Support for Linux

Per-Arne Hellarvik submitted this question: "I have a (it seems) unusual internal PnP ISDN card, the Diamond Netcommander ISDN/EC. I've read somewhere that someone was trying to get some specs on the chipset from Diamond Multimedia, but that is some time ago. Can you tell me if there is support for this card in Linux, or if there is someone how know of a driver for this card??" Let me just say that Diamond has a bad record for releasing theyr hardware specs for their video line, and I have doubts that they'll treat their ISDN line any differently, although it would be nice if they started offering open specs so everyone can use, what would be decent hardware.

Ask Slashdot: Multiple Monitor Fun

A whole bunch of you have written in about multiple monitor (multi-headed) support in Linux. Is it possible? What's involved? Who supports it? These are all interesting questions, and one person made a point of noting that Windows could do it, and couldn't find out how to do it on Linux. There's also a nifty project in the works involving Linux and a "video wall"! Click below for more...

O'Reilly needs Palm Pilot UNIX People

strredwolf writes "If you didn't know already, the first edition of PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide from O'Reilly has been out, giving some good items on our coolest palm computer. However, there's no Unix/Linux information(only Mac & Win95/NT)! Tim of O'Reilly, however, wants to put some Unix PalmPilot info into the Second Edition of the book, but needs help from the community." Wouldn't mind seeing that one myself.

Oracle Lite for the Pilot?

miket wrote in to send us a link to a page or Oracle's website where you can read about Oracle Lite. Versions will be available at the end of October for both Wince and the Pilot. It's only the client (duh) but it still might be a fun toy- if you can access your server wirelessly.

Phone/Pilot Combos

Dennis Burke writes "For those fans of the PalmPilot out there, Qualcomm has just announced the pdQ, which combines a PalmPilot with the Q-phone " It's not shipping 'til the first half of 1999, so don't ask Santa for one. But it looks excellent. Its only a matter of time before the wireless networkable PDA becomes a reality, this is a nice baby step.

New Pilot competitor

Harry McKee sent us a good story about a new handheld maker that is going to try and undercut the Pilot. Here's the good news-cheaper price, same processor, and no WinCEing to be done. It will be using a different scripting language, called DaVinci. For more info from the company, Royal, check this story out. And well, hopefully this forces Pilot prices down.

Palm Founders Leaving

Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky will leave 3Com on Monday, the San Jose Mercury reports. Apparently, the two are leaving on good terms, and are going to found a new company that will eventually license PalmOS. Hmm, more PalmOS clones. Also of interest to PalmPilot lovers like myself is the long-awaited PalmPilot Pager, which upgrades your PalmPilot to 2MB of RAM, and PalmOS 3, too. It's finally here.
