Wind-Up Notebook Computers 82

wtpooh writes "Wired has an article about a company developing a wind-up power source for computers. Apple is reportedly interested. " The company is also talking about its use in things like sub-notebooks. Man, if they made this (solar panels will probably be included), and if I got Iridium, I could go outside and still post. Seriously though, for people working the field, and less developed nations, things like this could really help the spread of computers.

Ask Slashdot: Is SMP worth it? 368

Here's another question from the ubiquitous Clan Anonymous Coward! I usually don't do AC posts, but the question was rather interesting enough: "Dual socket 7 motherboards are pretty cheap now, and P200 and P233 processors are way under $100. So would buying a dual p233 system be better than a single PII 450? I would be dual booting Linux and NT." What issues do you have to worry about when dealing with SMP (motherboards, memory, heat)? What SMP issues are there with PIIs as well?

Worth visiting just for a peek at what notebook inovations there are in store. " I wandered through this place awhile back- there's lots of crazy stuff. I'm really interested in doing a review of the current crop of subnotebooks running Linux- anyone have contacts to get me some demo machines?

Add a tilt sensor to your PalmPilot 47

Dan Wineman writes "Here are instructions for enabling your Pilot to sense gravity and acceleration. You need a steady hand with a soldering iron, and it definitely voids anything resembling a warranty, but imagine the possibilities! There's already an Oxyd clone (like 2-D Marble Madness) that supports it, and I suppose a pedometer application might be doable. Remember, never ask a geek "why"; just nod your head and back away slowly... "

Toshiba Snubs Linux/IrDA Developers 182

Dag Brattli, the lead developer on the Linux/IrDA team has written "I Just got a mail today which says that Toshiba will not disclose any information regarding chips inside their laptops. This is a final answer (its been decided as high up as it gets) so there is nothing more we can do and we just have to accept it. I will strongly recommend that Linux users don't buy any Toshiba Equipment! " Click below to read the rest of Dag's email and see what you can do to help..

Tom's Hardware benchmarks K6-3 and PIII 70

Christopher Thomas writes "Tom's Hardware Page has finally posted comprehensive benchmark results for the Intel's Pentium III and AMD's K6-3." The quick summary is that Intel must be experiencing deep fear right now- the most significant change from the P2 is the cost. Fortunately the rumors of the 1ghz P3s are flying fast and furious. If you can't beat 'em, up the clockspeed.

K6-3 on Monday 135

This Monday, AMD will unveil the K6-3 at 400 and 450 MHz. The chip will have an on-chip 256k L2 cache, and will go in existing Super 7 motherboard. The chip will probably top out at 500 MHz shortly, but the chip should be produced into Y2K. The chip reputedly performs like Pentium *3* of equivalent clock, or even outperforms it with enough cache. People like me have a decision to make - I have a K6-2 333 with 1MB of L2 cache, and need to decide whether or not I should save up for a K7 (hopefully SMP...) or just go for it and buy a K6-3. Thank William Rhodes for the heads up
