Ask Slashdot: Wooden Chasis and EMF 196

Red Leader asks: "Hi. I'm writing in the hope that some electrical people will be able to help me out with the nitty gritty aspects of shielding a computer case. You see, I'm building myself a computer case out of wood. I have already built one, but it was merely a wood case (replacing the plastic) which overlayed a standard metal chassis. Well, that was too heavy, and I also want to use my own layout for the 'guts' of the box. So aside from heat, noise and grounding (which i've pretty much figured out) - I'm worried about the electromagnetic interference aspect of this new machine. It's most likely going to be a dual Celeron based Ultra-Wide SCSI2 system - which I think (!?!) will generate quite a large electromagnetic field. I've been thinking of shielding the case by lining it with this with copper fabric or something similar - but don't know how it sizes up to a solid metal case. Any help would be greatly appreciated - and I'll be sure to post pics of the case (well it's actually more than that) in progress and when completed.

New Interface for Handheld Computers 50

Kevin Remhof writes "Researchers at SunLabs have come up with a new theoretical interface for handheld computers. As stated in the abstract: "The key idea of the proposed model is that the display can be compressed and expanded by moving objects radially farther away or closer to an event horizon in the middle of the screen." It's tailor-made for small screens. "

Playstation 2 Under Export Controls 269

Henry Pang writes "The New York Times has this interesting article. It seems like people of China will not be able to buy Playstation 2 next year. " It's The Times, so you need a free account to read it, but it talks about the Playstation being a supercomputer by US standards. Also notes that within 12 months, a $1200 Merced based PC would also be illegal.

Top 500 Fastest Computers 97

epaulson writes "The Top500 list has been released for the first half of 1999. The number one machine remains ASCI Red. The biggest Linux machine is cplant at 129, and Avalon is number 160. The list is a ranking of results from the LINPACK benchmark, which is a Linear Algebra code, so things like distributed.net and SETI@home don't count. "

Overclock Your Palm 35

curveclimber writes " Taking memos a little too slow on your Palm? Overclock that puppy with Afterburner, a HackMaster hack. It can push that DragonBall EZ MC68EZ328 up to 29MHz (YMMV). Read a review, or the Afterburner FAQ. Remember overclocking's fun, until you smell smoke. For the the foolhardy, download away. "

Palm Pilot Free Software page? 6

Mr. Feely asks: "As an author of free software for the Palm Pilot, I've found it helpful to look at the other free Pilot software out there for ideas and code. However, I've found most that free software just by browsing around; as far as I can tell there doesn't seem to be any central index of free software (and free software resources) for the Pilot. Does such a thing exist? If not, is there sufficient interest to create it?"

Nikon considers Linux support for its Digicams 55

Obscura writes "Recently I bought a Nikon Coolpix 950. When visiting the Nikontech Digital Camera Support Forum the admin mentioned that Nikon was considering official support for Linux and software for use with its digicams. In a post he mentioned that they are watching the number of Linux related questions and requests for support. " Hold your horses folks - I've got e-mail from the web master - it looks like the point has been made, and things taken a bit out of context- so no more posting, k?

Dual Socket 370 Card for a Single Slot 1 MoBo 95

Vertigo1 writes "This is a dual Socket 370 card that will allow TWO (2) Socket 370 Celerons into a single Slot 1 motherboard. The pic is here. The company is QDI. From what their page say it requires no special motherboard, but I have yet to confirm it. I dunno if this is really on par with what usually is posted but to go along with your overclocking and cooling stuff I thought this was a nice addition! "

More Cooling/Overclocking Fun 69

heretic writes "Here's another construction article on cooling components down to -40. While not quite as insane as the mineral oil solution (heh), it's still quite extreme. For only $600, it's pretty neat that he can nearly double his processor speed. I guess these sorts of techniques will remain viable until we have massive N-way SMP. "

Are AUI to AUI Null Cables Possible? 10

Mike Harvey asks: "Hi, after obtaining a SparcStation 1 I realized I have no way to connect it to my network. I know I could go out and buy a transceiver for it, but, as one of the really poor students of the world, I was wondering if it was possible to do an AUI to AUI null (or crossover) cable, and whether it would work to connect it to a second net card in one of the other computers? I could just try it, but I would prefer not to make either into paperweights."

CPU Cooling Insanity 319

moonboy writes "I saw this over at Ars Technica. This dude submerged his entire motherboard in mineral oil. As if that weren't enough, he then and got a 5,000 BTU (window?) unit and circulates the oil through the coils to keep it all cool." Don't expect Gateway to be offering these any time soon... I suspect it will a bit more than just void your warranty. It'll probably make motherboard engineers come to your home under cover of darkness carrying loaded shotguns :)

Ask Slashdot: Reliable Powering of ATX Systems? 173

David Muir Sharnoff writes in with this question: "ATX power supplies don't supply power unless the motherboard says to turn on. Many motherboards do not have a setting of: 'supply power all the time.' This means that ATX systems cannot safely be used a servers. Anyone know of an ATX power supply that ignores signal? " More appropriately: does anyone know of an ATX motherboard/power supply/case combination where powering is similar to AT systems?

LED displays with Linux? 21

Timothy asks: "It seems that everywhere I look I see articles about Linux/chickenwire based MP3 players for cars that utilize a LED display instead of an actual computer screen for outputting track information and such. My question for you is simple: where can I find information on buying/using a LED display in Linux. Where can you buy them, what's an average cost for one (so I could gauge what's listed)? Would it hook up to a serial/com device? Do you need a special card to interface it into a computer system? How would you go about writing information to the LED and such?"
