420 Gigabyte Hard Drives 121
Zach Garner writes "IBM is introducing a new line of harddrives, code named "Shark", that will start from 420gig and go up to 11 terrabyte." Now thats what I'm
talking about. This kinda stuff has got to make the film industry as
nervous as the recording industry. But mainly it just makes things
like digital audio and video mixing a lot easier. (Update: 07/27 01:32 by CT : Course a
few people noted that these things are the size of refrigerators so
its not like their gonna be desktop toys any time soon either)

CybeRHiDe asks:
"Does anyone know of a case that uses the common front pull bezel, 3 piece sliding case, and 2 auxilary fans (one in the front bottom, and one just above the atx onboard connections)? Enlight has the pull off bezel/sliding piece case, but lacks the 2nd extra fan i've come to love on cases. Thanx!"
Linux and G.lite 3
Graymalkin asks:
"With the new G.lite standard for ADSL service having been agreed upon, I only have one question: Will the new modems be Linux compatible? Does anyone have a Compaq G.lite modems with specifications so that others have a place to start? Are they going to have their own controlling chips or will they be akin to winmodems?"
Ask Slashdot: Multiple Webcams and FreeBSD 112
Swamp|Fox asks:
"I've been tasked with finding a way to have multiple web cameras
(at least 6) capturing simultaneously for a soon-to-be-opened
daycare. This is not exactly a new idea, and there are many daycares out there utilizing it. The idea is that parents can check in on their kid(s) from their office. There are many commercial packages out there, but none that quite fit perfectly. The problem(s) lie in the fact that there will be a singleserver, most likely a PentiumII 300, with 256 megs of RAM, and U2W SCSI, acting as both the web server, a NAT'd internet gateway/firewall, and the capture host for the webcams."
There's a bit more to this, but the gist of it is that this fellow is looking for options. Click below for more.
LCD Monitor For Your Eyes Only 113
Bryan_Casto writes "USAToday has an article about Sceptre's new LCD monitor, which hides the screen image from anyone not wearing the glasses that come with the monitor. The screen appears white to ordinary eyes, but with the polarized glasses, the desktop comes into view. "

Vintage Computers on the New York Times 98
tomreagan writes "The New York Times has a good article on vintage computers. It talks about a wide variety of the old beasts and is quite exhaustive. It makes me proud to admit that my favorite computer is still my first, a trusty Apple IIc.

Mercury Capsule recovered after 38 years 81
38 years after it's sinking the Mercury capsule that Gus Grissom flew into space. Officially called the Liberty Bell 7, it was recovered from a depth of 15,000 feet (about 3 miles). They were unable to recover the hatch, meaning that the mystery of whether the hatch bolts blew prematurely, or Grissom activated them too early while remain a mystery. It's going to be cleaned and put on exhibiton-the Discovery Channel footed the bill. Hats off to them.
Palm IIIe Announced 132
Palm Computing introduced the Palm IIIe today.
The new handheld ships with 2MB of storage, as well as a built-in
TCP/IP stack. According to the press release, it's aimed at new users, like students. You know, it's funny - my little sister
has been asking me for a Palm. Maybe this is what we've been waiting for. The SRP is US$229.
Building a Teraflop Donated Beowulf Cluster 118
A number of people have written in about the new Teraflop Project aka Project Übermensch. It's an interesting idea-these folks want to get essentially the equivalent of 10757 AMD KII 350s, and turn it into a monster Beowulf cluster. In exchange for donating a machine to the project, you get a month of full bore processing power from your old machine, as well as a for-life e-mail address. They've got an address on the site to send machines to-but how often do you think one of these things is gonna break? I'd hate to sys-admin thousands of old boxen.
Motherboard Memory Limitations 13
digitalunity asks:
"When most motherboards with room for 3 DIMMs state their
maximum memory as 768MB, it would seem that this is based
upon the assumption that a 256MB DIMM is the largest
available. I noticed that IBM has said that 1GB DIMMs will
be available soon. Are the stated memory limitations of motherboards
inherent to their design or can you really put more memory
than they state?"
HDTV capable Video Cards? 6
HaeMaker asks:
"I am wondering if there are any hardware vendors
working on video cards capable of producing the odd
resolutions in the HDTV format (like 1080x1920!).
I just got a 65" HDTV and would love to hook a PC up to
it and get better than NTSC standard analog."
National Semiconductor unveils their PC-on-a-chip 51
KevinRemhof writes "National Semiconductor unveiled their Geode family of chips. The SC1400 chip has video and PC functions built in. The memory and other features require separate chips. The target audience is set-top boxes. Expect to see the first ones by next summer. This is a bold move shortly after selling off Cyrix to Via Technologies. " As other articles point out, they are trying to save themselves by moving into a less-competitive area of the market.

Number Five writes "Art+Com announces UrbanJunglePack, a wearable Linux computer designed for jounalists that uses a camcorder and microphone to record photos, sound, text, and video, which can then be transmitted back to a base station using a built-in wireless phone. Linux Hardware Databases located at
CompHardware.com
and LhD.DataPower.com
have decided to merge and form a new partnership for Linux
hardware information. The new partnership gives
LhD.DataPower.com control of the database while giving

Battery Status of Wireless Keyboard/Mice? 10
Elvii
asks: "I'm looking for a wireless keyboard/mouse
solution for my system. My first choice is the Logitech
Cordless Desktop because I've seen them and like them,
(works as standard keyboard and wheel mouse, to the best
of my knowledge) but I'd like to be able to monitor the
battery life in the keyboard/mouse as the Windows software
can do. Anyone know of software or specs for these types
of things? Logitech hasn't answered my email request for
help yet." Is this yet another closed spec that Logitech
would do well to open up? Is this feature available for
any other OS aside from Windows?
Sound Cards with Optical Output? 12
Scrambler asks:
"I was looking around for a cheap sound card
with optical output. I want it so I can record high quality
MP3 music and recorded music/messages from my PC to my
minidisc player. If anyone knows of a reasonalbly priced
card would they please post it?"
Sony's Head Mounted Display (Cont) 70
madsatcom noted that
the Sony Head Mounted Monitor that we mentioned awhile back
is actually available now
on the Sony Website. I can't find a resolution on that page,
but it simulates a 30" screen, weighs 4.2 ounces, and costs
a woppin' $2600... If anyone at Sony is reading, repeat after
me: "Rob Must Test One of These Screens. Contact Him Now And
Offer Him a Sample Unit". Seriously, wearable computing is
getting closer, it just ain't getting much cheaper.
