Quiet Laptop Fan? 12

wilton writes "Many places sell replacement cooling fans for desktop system, but where can I get one for my laptop ? Specifically a very quiet fan. I have a fan made by Sunon who appear to be the largest maker of fans. The model I have GB0545ADB1-8 is *supposed* to be the quiet model, but it certainly isn't."

Northpoint DSL Warns Customers of Shutdown 111

noweb4u writes "According to their website it looks like the failed merger with verizon was the straw that broke the camel's back. Hope they can get funding enough to allow their DSL customers to migrate to other providers." CNNfn also more details about the details of the case - for all those who are Northpoint customers - good luck.

Light Touch / Low Force Keyboards 24

buggedbug writes "My favorite old keyboard finally died, and all of the new keyboards I have tried have such a hard keypress that I get wrist pain. Can anyone suggest a good pc keyboard with a light touch / low-force keypress? I actually did try the Kinesis Classic which does have a good low force keypress (45 grams), but the contouring and relocated keys are driving me nuts and the contouring is more than I need to prevent the pain. I'd prefer to find a more standard keyboard... Any suggestions?" We've done plenty of keyboard questions, regarding durable keyboards, one-handed keyboards, ergonomic keyboards, etc. But I don't recall any on light-touch keyboards.

3Com Drops Internet Appliances 153

Anonymous Coward writes: "According to this article, 3Com is killing the Linux-powered Kerbango internet radio. Also being killed in the dismantling of their appliance division is the Audrey wireless webpad and 3Com's webcam." Looks like yet another opportunity to pick up some gadgets at close-out prices.

Microcoolers Could Change Processor Design 112

Skaven writes: "Nature.com is reporting about these nifty new microcoolers, tiny thermoelectric heat sinks that can be built directly onto CPUs. Using the new technology, scientists cooled a processor at 100 degrees C by 7 degrees. That's still a fried t-bird, but what this means is that if the technology gets good enough, cooling chips could soon be getting a lot easier. If anything, small 'hot spots' on the CPU could be avoided by strategic placement of microcoolers, thus helping all of us overclockers out. Heck, maybe even increasing the voltage to your CPU would make it run cooler...how weird would that be?"

Whatever Happened To The Thin X11 Terminals? 39

GregK asks: "Once upon a time (in the fun, fast 80's), you could find a different kind of X-box, a thin client that ran X!! and did little local processing. These boxes had a monitor, keyboard, and a thin box of electronics to communicate on an ethernet port and run an X11 server locally. Whatever happened to this kind of thing? I ask because I'm interested in putting a thin client in my bedroom, and leave my Linux server in the basement. A wireless connection could send the data over the two floors, and in an ideal world I'd have a color LCD monitor (24 bit or more) connected to a wireless transceiver. The monitor would not have a fan or a hard drive, but would be able to run X11. This would let me have an always-on connection without an always-loud presence in my bedroom. Now the best I can come up with is a modified, old laptop with the hard drive ripped out, and a boot disk/CD-R combination that would let the CPU boot and read the X software into memory. But there has to be better! Can anyone help?"

Palm Teases With Slim, Pretty New Models 157

stylewagon writes: "Yup, the 2 new Palm models were released today -- right on time. Palm's website has just been updated with all the info about them -- the new mono m500 and the colour m505. Both feature the new Palm Os4.0, expansion slots and (finally!) have a USB cradle (a la Handspring)" Well, they haven't actually been released -- the CNET article uses that old standby "unveiled" instead, but Palm says they'll be out mid- to late spring, in all their Secure Digital Expansion New Perfect World glory.

Head-Mounted Mouse 57

madburn writes "MacInTouch has a blurb about a device from Boost Technology called the Tracer. It appears to be an almost-affordable head-mounted "mouse" with the features and performance needed for serious use, including 360-degree field of view. It supports USB and PS/2. I wonder if this will make the Quake experience more immersive?" The girl in the picture looks kinda stoned, but I can imagine that this could be useful for the handicapped, and fun for someone looking for a different input device.

Finding Details on Cell Phone Internals? 2

zosa asks: "I'm looking for a resource that details which cell phone makers use which processor cores in their different cell phone models (and any other hardware details if possible). It seems you can get some details on the IC vendor's sites (TI, ADI, ARM etc.) but it is hard to find out the details of who is using what processor core(s). In addition I know that not all of the cell phone makers develop there own software. Maybe someone here knows of a place where I can find a matrix of manufacutrers, models, software developers and CPU/DSP cores for the cell phone industry (one can dream)."

Fujitsu SPARC64-GP vs. Sun UltraSPARC II? 19

AtariDatacenter asks: "I've noticed that Fujitsu is starting to market their Primepower line of Sun compatible servers, based on the SPARC64-GP processor. Their Primepower 2000, with 128 processors running at 563mhz, would seem to be a killer of the Sun E10000, which is based on the UltraSPARC II processor. And their server beats the Sun E10k in the top ten TPC-C performance results for non-clustered systems. What do Slashdot readers have to say about the Primepower line of servers?"

New Sony Clie: PalmOS Is Back in Style 166

mattr was among several people to send in obscure and confusing links to japanese sites featuring pictures and foreign words about the latest Clie- Sony's PalmOS based handheld. However mattr wrote a good summary of what its all about, and you can read about it by just hitting that link below. Jogdial, Memory stick, capacity to store 2 hours of video, color etc etc. I've kinda considered WinCE handhelds to be way ahead in the game, but it looks like the score may be evening up.

Avoiding Sweatshop PC Components? 41

Jimmy asks: "Is there such a thing as a guilt-free PC or components? From what I've been reading, third world sweatshops are contracting just as much assembly work to the big-name hardware suppliers as the unscrupulous clothing/fashion industry. I'd love to have a PC which wasn't made off of the back of some underage girl working for pennies an hour. What about it? When is our new-groove techie conscience going to kick in?" Such concern is commendable, but it's not like Dell, Gateway or any other manufacturere advertise this fact in their Press Packets. How does one go about finding out such information and when you do, instead of just boycotting, why not go public?

The New Handspring Visor: The Edge 162

Looks pretty sweet at .44" thick...although the Springboard expansion requires a little add-on that comes with it." When I first read the name all I could think was a thin Visor...with pizza toppings. In any case, the device looks pretty darn cool. The Springboard expansion reminds somewhat of the iPaq does, but hey, more devices, better.
