You can also update via Software Update, of course, and you need to update iCal before iSync.

Predius asks: "I, like many others based on forum hopping, have an Apple G4 desktop that has decided it no longer wishes to power up. I've replaced PRAM batteries, verified power supply voltages, pressed the CUDA switch, and done combinations of the above. Trying to start it just results in a blip of the powersupply fan and the power led on the motherboard flashes once. Every now and then it will actually boot, and when it does it's 100% rock solid, will reboot fine, etc. If I power it off, I get to play games again trying to power it up. Does anyone know how to manually start an Apple Gigabyte or later rev power supply? Standard ATX power supplies can be fired up by shorting the green PWR ON lead to ground, but Apple decided to be different. I await the collective's wisdom."

dricci writes "Yahoo! has posted a press release from Apple, regarding the release date of the next major Mac OS X update, 10.3 ('Panther'). The update will be available 8:00 p.m. on October 24th at Apple Retail Stores and Authorized Resellers for $129.00 US (Family Pack for up to 5 users will be $199). Pretty much the same pricing structure they had for Jaguar. It looks like 'old world' Beige G3 support has been discontinued -- the update requires a Mac with built in USB."

If you installed the previous update, the size of the new update is small, ~680K... if you can connect to the network, that is. Clearly you get different downloads depending on what you did with the previous 10.2.8 update. Apple Knowledge Base article 25524 has the details. It looks very familiar. I'm installing mine right away, how about you?"

It has the same shape but has a chrome finish, like the robots of Hajime Sorayama." mneptok writes "Premier Macintosh troubleshooting site MacFixIt has just posted a detailed report on the bugs and broken features in Apple's latest point release for MacOSX. As reported previously on Slashdot, the 10.2.8 update was released and pulled within hours earlier this week. Many users upgraded before the update was pulled and are being bitten, and MacFixIt has run down the behavior you can attribute to Apple's goof."

'Ease of maintenance and software installation were cited among the reasons for the switch.' I wonder if Keitaro and Naru will get iMacs at Hinata as well."

Their conclusion: 'we see that indeed the G5 is generally as fast as the best Intel-based workstations currently available.' But of course 'our cousin Ned can build you a better'un at half the dough.'"

questamor writes "The ever gadget-driven among us are at it again, with a Japanese site disassembling a brand new 15" PowerBook. Of interest is dual blowers. Quite a good deal packed into that sleek Al case. An older photo article on the same site details a 12" takeapart. That's stunning for barely an inch thick. Kudos to Apple's designers for a machine that looks as well designed in as out, and to the guys willing to unscrew the screws on a machine barely 5 days into warranty."

He's said that a G5 powerbook is "an issue of good, solid engineering" and that "a few years ago, nobody thought it would be possible to get a G4 processor in a PowerBook". Start saving your money."
