jammag writes "It's a dirty secret that many Linux desktop users don't like to admit: there's scads of closed source code that's commonly used with the Linux desktop. Matt Hartley describes this contradiction, pointing to examples like proprietary drivers, the popularity of Skype among Linux users (instead of the open source Ekiga) and the use of Wine. He concludes that, hey, if the code works, use it — a stance that won't sit well with purists. But his article raises the question: is it better to embrace some closed source fixes, and so create a larger user base, or is it better to remain pure, and keep Linux for the specialists?" Linux could have - SHOULD HAVE - replaced Microsoft as the OS of choice. Gates and company served up a big fat batting-practice-speed fastball, and the Linux community should have drilled it over the fence in right field. (For you arrogant techno-geeks, that's a baseball analogy for, "You F'ed up")
All the pieces are available in the Linux world for users like Ma and Pa Kettle to enjoy Linux as a worthy replacement for Windows XP - Internet, email, image editing, word processing, file management, games..
Microsoft Zealots and Linux Purists are both evil! (Score:1)
