anzha writes "Rumors are floating around online that Linux Networx, the Utah Linux supercomputing company, has gone belly up. SGI announced that it has bought the core assets of LNXI. Furthermore, the rumors are that the doors were locked and employees were just given their paychecks. What does this mean for Linux supercomputing?"

I am currently onsite with three other techs at the federal reserve bank in Kansas city moving a cluster. It is the last field work lnxi will ever do. Support will be kept on for six months and everyone else got walking papers. So for six months I will get to reassure customers they won't get fucked like all my coworkers.

  I had a previous employer or two go under as well; it's never pretty, but at least at the last one it was more like apoptosis [wikipedia.org] than necrosis -- they kept everyone on for a few extra weeks, attempted to place everyone, and even allowed departing employees to purchase their personal workstations. That was classy.
