hypnosec writes "The Department of Work and Pensions, UK has an entire block of /8 IPv4 addresses that is unused and an e-petition has been filed in this regards asking the DWP to sell it off thus easing off the IPv4 address space scarcity in the RIPE region a little. John Graham-Cumming, the person who first found this, wrote in a blog post that the DWP was in possession of 51.0.0.0/8 IPv4 addresses. According to Cumming, these 16.9 million IP addresses are unused at the moment and he derived this conclusion by doing a check in the ASN database. An e-petition has been filed in this regards."

  • There are many of these un-used blocks of IPv4 around. Government and educational establishments often under use their huge ranges that were allocated freely in the early days of the Internet.

    However, the fact is that the move to IPv6 is enevitable. Chasing and reclaiming these spare blocks is just procrastination.

      IPv6 will be embraced only when it is economically advantageous to do so... not a moment before. The core problem is the incredibly ineffective advocacy that's being done on behalf of IPv6. A large part of the resistance to change is in the system administrator and working class SME community. When they are called into to testify before the boss about this subject, they err on the side of caution, stick with what they know and are comfortable with, and don't have a good counter argument for NAT'ing to an
