I've no experience configuring or administering a Linux server having worked with MS and PICK based solutions my whole life, so I'm looking for something that will be relatively straightforward to implement and not a chore to manage and preferably not completely CLI. I will be serving a forum(phpBB 3 suits my needs and seems adequate) and a variety of PHP driven content with a MySQL backend. Requirements are PHP 5.3.0+ and MySQL 5+. Suggestions?"

Newb-friendly Linux flavor for LAMP server?

  • Try XAMPP [apachefriends.org]

I installed Puppy [puppylinux.org] and Hiawatha [puppylinux.org] on VirtualBox [virtualbox.org] easily enough.
  • Not too long ago, I was faced with the same question. Before choosing the linux distro, ask yourself what is important to you. The primary question for me was whether I wanted the latest versions of apache, mysql, and php, or did I prefer proven stability instead. Ultimately stability was most important and I went with CentOS and Virtualmin . There is tons of community support for both, it runs forever, and most of what you need to do will be GUI based.

If you're not careful, you're going to catch something.
