Fudge Factor 3000 writes: Apple and Exxon are fighting it out to be the company with the largest market cap. Yesterday, Apple pulled ahead. It is hard to believe a tech company can beat out an oil giant, but is the market cap really the measure of the size/influence of a company? It is certainly the simplest metric to consider. Ars is running an excellent article on how to measure the size of a company. They discuss different metrics such as cash balance, revenue, number of employees, etc. It is a great read. So is Exxon or Apple the biggest company? You decide.

  • Saudi Aramco's estimated value in 2010 ranges from 2.2 trillion USD to 7 trillion USD.

    • Market cap is actually a meaningless number because you do not know the price volatility of the shares with trading volume. If someone wanted to sell 10% of Apple suddenly, it would probably trigger a price collapse, while selling 10% of Exxon might have minimal effect. People know that oil is going to stay valuable, while nobody really knows what Apple will be worth in even 6 months.

      The article explains this more clearly than you will see it in most business journals, and some people really need to be told
