LinuxHQ.com Renamed to kernelnotes.org

B. Galliart wrote in to tell us that the The LinuxHQ web site is now available at KernelNotes.org. The reason for the change is explained here. One of my favorite sites, I'm bummed to see trouble over there. Note that this also means that Kernel Edge Linux has moved. Update those bookmarks.

Im surprised that It took this long for such information to pop up on /. I mean we are talking of something that happened over a week ago. Figured that this info wasnt good enough for slash dot or the fact that it was on linux.com and LWN that it didnt need to be posted here......

I did an altavista search for "The ECS Network", and found several pages describing them as an Internet Presence Provider. The pages had a high linux-topic content, but were physically located at another domain. To wit: http://yardim.bilkent.edu.tr/Online/Linux/

Say, I was one of the people to help fund getting www.linuxhq.org (it's a webpage for our linux help channel.) Since I don't think they use it for anything productive maybe the former owners of linuxhq.com might pay big bucks for it?

What's Obviously Happened...

is that the guy who actually owns the LinuxHQ.com name is selling it to the highest bidder. While it's his name to do with as he will, it's unfortunate that he didn't notify anyone before yanking it out from under us.

Watch www.linuxhq.com to surface in the next couple of months as the "hottest, latest Linux site" brought to you by Really Big Corporation, LLC... making the world safe for corporate oligarchy.

Hey, if Mark Evans wants to do what he originally did with the site, that would be great. It was a fine site before, especially the patch collection.

I don't think he's going to resurrect it though.

Instead he was shopping the domain name around (and he actually had a buyer). Of course, he didn't tell me about this until the last minute. When I questioned where I fit in to all this, he got pissed off and pulled the domain down.

Mark Evans did assign copyright of the site contents to me when I volunteered to take over the site, but he never transferred the domain name (even though I asked several times). I guess it's his right to keep (or sell) the domain name if he really wants to.

I'll admit that I haven't done as good of a job - due to personal time constraints. I personally think the site works best when it is kept non-commercial, so I haven't tried to make a buck off of it.

OMark Evans originally shut the site down (2 years ago) because he didn't have enough time to put a lot of time into it either (and it wasn't generating significant revenue). It's a big job. He was probably spending 4 hours a day on it before - I can't do that. Most of the time I spend on it is just fixing stuff that breaks. I do want to put a bit more "content" into it.

Fortunately, sites like Cutting Edge Linux, Kernel Traffic and the Linux Kernel Patch Archive have picked up the slack. If anybody else wants to help create neat services for the kernel users and developers - just create your own site, and I'll link it!

I've been planning a major upgrade to the site with an improved search engine and some more kernel-related content. However, this domain name business has been a huge waste of time - so my plans have been pushed back a bit now. I'm doing this in my free time, which I don't have a lot of.

I'll have the mailing list archives fixed soon. Same with the search engine. I would have done it earlier this week, but I lost a hard drive on my workstation. Ugh. What else can go wrong?

At least most people seem to like the new name. :-)

I've had some suspision that CmdrTaco isn't as unbiased when it comes to news submissions as we all suspected. I'm sure many people posted this long ago, why didn't it make it up until today??..

Granted he must receive 1000's of posts a day, it could have been missed, but I've noticed important news posted on LWZ sometimes never makes it onto /.

I was suprised also that this took so long to pop up, since I submited the story almost a week ago when it was posted on FreshMeat. By the Way Kernel Edge Linux should be Cutting Edge Linux.

LinuxHQ coming back?

Isn't anyone excited about the possibility of the *real* LinuxHQ coming back? Remember that all
this kernelnotes.org stuff was just temporary filler when the LinuxHQ maintainer ran out of time to do the site. It never had linuxhq.com as a permanent domain, and it certainly never had the quality IMO of the original LinuxHQ.
