Linus Speech Broadcast Today

  • So what is that this time of the year? EST or EDT?
  • EDT.. GMT - 4 hours.

    I believe.

  • ZDTV's live feed is tucked away at http://www.leoville.com

  • rvplayer for linux would play this thing!
  • According to the condex web site, Bill Gates goes on at 10am and Linus goes on at 10:30. I'll probally catch the end of the Win2000 bullshit.
  • Yes, it was pretty good. we got there a little late, and had to weasle our way through the crowd to hear anything... I was surprised to see that I was the only one wearing any prominent linux related paraphernalia -- the RedHat red fedora. Not even the RedHat folks were wearing 'em. I was getting some strange looks from people when I was watching the Windows 2000 demo though.
  • Unfortunately, the keynote isn't going to be broadcast live, as Linus' speech is actually at about 10am today. The web broadcast is delayed.

    Unfortunately, I have class at 10:30 today, so I can't go. :(
  • What's that in Central European again? 22.15 - 23.15?
  • That was LINUS's baby, you... you...
    you Anonymous Coward! ;^)

If you like Jobs, you ought to see Sun's CEO
give a speech some time! HE is funny!

Anyways, his jokes were funny, what you could
hear of them. The only bad part about the
broadcast was the camera-work. It was too shakey,
jumping all over the place, including many shots
of Linus' kneecaps, the floor, the ceiling...
and whenever anyone in the audience asked a
question, all you heard was thumbs fumbling with
the camera. The guy really needed a tripod and
    external microphone!
  • It's odd that the speech was given in the morning
(according to other posters), but the broadcast
was at a specific time in the afternoon. I was
able to watch most of it, but lost connection with
their server for about 10-15 minutes, twice!

It was streaming, as if it were live, so when I
was able to reconnect, I'd missed a big chunk of
it. Does anyone know if they have a mirror, or
    an archive to download from?

If you select "Video Archive" from the page,
RealPlayer responds with an error: "Requested file
    not found...".

    Thanks,
    Kevin
  • Worked for me... Red Hat 5.1, rvplayer 5.0.0.35,
kernel 2.2.6, using the 2.2.x/rvplayer problem
workaround found on www.real.com. I watched more
than half of it, but I did lose connection with
their server a couple times... but it _did_ work.

Are you able to view other content on the ZDTV
site? If not, you may have a config problem. I've
watched more than half a dozen clips tonight alone
    with no problems.

    Later,
    Kevin
  • I was there, in the 3rd row. The audience was enthusiastic, there were a couple of attempts at the wave before the whole thing started. They did give him quite a standing ovation when he was introduced.

He did bring 2 darling children, one cried for a short time, but not constantly like the kid that i swear always sits behind me in airplanes.

The meeting was moved from the original hall to a larger room and the room was still packed. It seemed like that there were a lot of press there. The number of questions from the audience was amazing. It as much like a press conference in that respect.

The jokes were funny. I thought so and so did the audience. The first time the lights went out was just as he said that Linux was used even in nuclear power plants. Then he said "not
    the one controling those though."

I was lucky enough to get an autograph. He was very graciously signing them while protesting he really did need to make his next appointment.

  • Er, How wrong are you?

The damm thing WON'T PLAY - I have to use vmware and Win95!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I missed it. I want it now. Where do I get it?

  • no, you have to add _6_ hours.
  • Not sure what FAQ this belongs in, but:

    % setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/lib/Real
    % netscape &

(now try some Real Media links)
  • You don't have to worry about converting from EST to GMT ant then to your local time. It is available now. http://play.rbn.com/?zd/livenow/live/live_28.rm

  • Are you using 2.1.x or 2.2?
If you are, bugs were fixed in the sound drivers. While this is good, it wound up breaking realplayer as it was programed to use some of these bugs. The program rpopen( http://www.i2k.com/~jeffd/rpopen/ ) will allow you to emulate these bugs and realplayer will work. If you have some problems using this program, just email me.
  • This baby is v5.0 content. It should work with the v5.0 player for Linux. If you follow the link right now, you get a video clip saying the clip you're looking for isn't here yet, perfectly viewable on my Linux box.
  • Especially all the subtle jokes/digs he made about Microsoft. Overall, though, he was quite gracious and fun to listen to.

Dynamically binding, you realize the magic. Statically binding, you see only the hierarchy.
