Peter Quinn To Keynote ODF Workshop at SCALE 4x

OpenDocument isn't intended to weaken commercial software, it's intended to improve the position of consumers.

The availability of standard image formats hasn't stopped Adobe from selling photoshop.

Whether that's the intention or not, that's what a good portion of ODF's consumer base is hoping for. By weakening commerical software's grasp on the market, the more we aren't forced into complying with propreitary standards. Frankly, i think government itself should not be allowed to touch proprietary software as much as possible if a publicly open standard is available. It reeks of corporate special interest and using government institutions that we all pay for, to push a particular company's agenda.

What exactly will a bunch of Linux hippies convening at a "workshop" accomplish? What, will they go over new ways to copy Microsoft? Or will they share new ideas to furter weaken the commercial software industry? Bunch of commies if you ask me.

I hate to feed the troll, but I'm sure the base concern is shared by more than a few people around here share.

The OpenDocument Fellowship *is not* an open source advocacy group. We're happy to hear of ANYONE using open formats, expecially in the realm of office software.

The sibling post comparing open formats in commercial office software to photoshop and open image formats has the right idea. Open standards stimulate competition -- both commercially and in the open community.
