Paris Hilton Recruited to Publicize Linux 438

lamasquerade writes "Paris Hilton has been named by the Open Source Development Legue as their next recruit in a bid to gain maximum exposure for FOSS. The new Legue's CEO, Jeremy Bleats, noted that the length of Ms Hilton's legs were a great factor in the decision and was sure to deny any links to The Red-Headed Legue. Richard Stallman was quick to label the activity a 'cheap stunt'."

    These April fools jokes are getting old fast. I bet that if they put a free copy in each of her porn video there would be alot more linux users.

    There is such a thing as "killing a joke"... ya know, that guy who gets a good laugh at a joke, then keeps adding on to the same thing over, and over, and over... the laughter dies down and then people just start nervously chuckling so they don't make the guy feel bad.

    How many young girls might be in the market to buy a computer, if for nothing else then to IM, and either wouldn't care, or wouldn't know, the difference between eye candy windows or eye candy linux. They might just be the only demographic to judge a disto based on it's "cuteness" factor.

    True, true. This girl I knew wanted me to install Linux on her machine after she saw the neat exploding animation that Window Maker made when you took an icon off the wharf. I'm sure that new wiggly window thing that the guy was showing on her last week will snag a few more converts.

    I don't see the attraction either. Plain face, boney body, bad attitude. I mean, its not like there is a shortage of little rich girls with no morals. She is far from the prettiest of the bunch.

    Its not like she is talented either. Her biggest assets are just being rich and being a celebrity. WHY she is a celebrity is beyond me.

    She is a celebrity b/c she is rich and grabs headlines with wild behavior. In other words, she acts like a celebrity, so the media celebrates her. Famous for being famous, Catch 22.

    The moral is either:

    (1) The media has skewed our idea of attractiveness towards unrealistic standards.

    (2) Slashdot readers should get out more often.

    Note the two aren't mutually exclusive.

    You must not get out much ;) There are prettier girls where I work. Hell, there are prettier girls working the register at the supermarket.

    Regarding "unrealistic standards", I don't find her standards as unrealistic: Average looking and boney. You can find that in any developing country. Last time I was in eastern Europe, I saw plenty of girls that were just as slim and much better looking. You can find millions of them in the former Soviet countries.

    It's the 1st of April. I read the article and it had the characteristic April Fool feel to it. Guess not too many bright sparks on /. these days.

    she is unfortunatly a damn good buisness woman, as much as we all may hate to admit it, shes building an empire off of her image. books, tv shows, clothing lines, perfume lines, endorcement deals, (crappy) film roles.... she somehow convinced the mass media that shes worht somthing and cashing in on it,at the end of the day, as shameless as it is, its working pretty well for her.

    In truth, I suspect she's every bit as dumb as she seems. Certainly there are plenty of actresses, etc. who are famously dumb blondes, but when you see them not acting, it is clear they are in fact quite inteligent and hard working, and are acting the dumb blonde part because it brings them success. Christina Applegate might be the cannonical example; she got playing the role of a stupid bimbo, but seen out of that role, on a talk show for example, she is incredibly articulate. But Paris isn't compromising her ego for financial success; she isn't acting dumb to get rich. She was born damn rich. I suppose she could be acting dumb to get attention. But working hard at acting stupid in pursuit of a cleverly crafted strategy whose whole purpose is to make oneself a world-famous icon of spoiled stupidity strikes me as pretty clear evidence one is actually stupid in reality.
