An anonymous submitter sends: "MontaVista and Robert Love are developing a patch for the Linux kernel to make it fully preemptible. Lots of users are involved, and tests show huge reductions in latency. Robert's kernel patches are here. Finally, an interview with Robert, on preemption and more."

OS-X is simply Mach with a BSD API. Mach is one of the original true Micro Kernel designs. 100k and I think it is closer to 10K. Mach is about passing messages between every aspect of what would be in the linux kernel. Scheduling, drivers, vm, everything operates in user space. Perhaps think of just the linux assembly code being all that is in the kernel. For all intense purpose, it is pre-emptible.
